Shoes that let you feel the ground

If you are looking for a pair you will happily wear almost every day of the year, the Contact S1 model is an excellent choice. Lightweight and exceptionally flexible, they allow you to stay closely connected to the ground with every step.

✔ ultra-thin 2.5 mm sole for maximum ground feel
✔ lightweight and breathable for everyday wear
✔ available in three widths and half sizes

Quality natural materials from local sources

The high-quality leather uppers are water-repellent and, with proper care, maintain excellent breathability and water-repellent properties over time.

The vulcanised rubber sole prevents moisture from entering the shoes up to 1.5 cm above ground level.

The insole features a 5 mm layer of felted natural sheep’s wool, which remains one of the best natural insulators against both cold and heat.

Developed and made in Slovenia.

Contact S1 is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to feel the ground beneath their feet as naturally as possible and enjoy a walking experience close to barefoot movement.

Shoe care helps maintain a good appearance, durability, and resistance to different weather conditions. Below are some practical tips.

Shoes made from smooth leather:

Occasionally wipe them with a damp cloth, which may include a drop of mild dishwashing liquid.
Clean shoes can be treated with a thin layer of colourless cream or leather balm, which should then be gently rubbed into the smooth leather using a dry cloth. When applying a new product, always test it on a less visible area before treating the entire surface.

Shoes made from suede, nubuck and brushed leather:

If dry and muddy, brush them with a suitable suede brush.
Occasionally wipe them with a damp cloth, which may include a drop of mild dishwashing liquid.
Once clean, apply a colourless waterproofing spray suitable for footwear.

For all Proalp shoes please also note:

Allow wet shoes to dry naturally in a shaded, well-ventilated area or indoors, away from direct heat sources.
Never soak them in water or wash them in a washing machine.
If desired, during the off-season you can stuff them with crumpled absorbent paper (e.g. newspaper) to help maintain their shape.

How often should be shoes cleaned and maintained?

Everyone has their own preferences, but we recommend cleaning and caring for your shoes a few times per season.

Ordered items that are in stock are dispatched within two working days of placing the order. For items that are not in stock, the average lead time is extended by approximately three working days. If the delivery time is further extended, we will notify you accordingly.

Comparison of two Contact barefoot soles

A key feature of Contact shoes is the 2.5 mm thin base sole made from vulcanised rubber, designed to provide maximum ground contact and natural foot feedback. It is highly flexible, non-slip, and wear-resistant. When wearing Contact shoes, you will not feel small sharp stones, and your feet gently adapt to the ground surface with every step, closely mimicking barefoot walking.

The sole also features a 15 mm protective rubber rand around the foot, making it suitable for use on wet surfaces, as it helps prevent direct contact between the upper and the ground. The rubber is very soft and flexible, with no rigid edge, allowing it to adapt to the width of your foot. This means you do not need to worry excessively about every millimetre of width when choosing your size.

An additional 5 mm sole with a coarse tread can be fitted to all thin Proalp Contact soles. For the S1 model, both versions are available as standard, and in our online shop you can choose the sole type that best suits your needs.

When wearing Contact shoes with a coarse tread, the sensation of ground contact is slightly reduced. However, the treaded sole remains flexible and provides excellent grip on uneven terrain, making it suitable for hiking – both for experienced barefoot hikers and beginners. This allows everyone to adjust the length and difficulty of their hiking routes according to their ability and goals.

We also highly recommend low-cut barefoot shoes with a coarse tread for anyone who is not used to barefoot footwear and prefers a little more protection than a thin barefoot sole provides. With Contact S1 and Contact S11 barefoot shoes with a coarse tread, you can gradually adapt to barefoot footwear and either transition to thinner soles over time or continue comfortably with this option.
