Creating high-quality footwear begins with a thorough understanding of the human foot – its structure, its function, and the way it moves. This understanding forms the foundation of everything we do. We combine it with the professional expertise rooted in Tržič’s centuries-old shoemaking tradition and with continuous international collaboration in footwear development.
Our feet play a vital role in our overall health. They support the full weight of the body, maintain an upright posture, and provide stability and balance. As we walk, our feet constantly change shape, redistribute pressure, and adapt their contact with the ground. Strong, capable feet allow us to move more freely, dynamically, and confidently. That is why truly high-quality footwear should never restrict the natural movement of the feet. The essential characteristics of Proalp footwear are therefore roominess, flexibility, and an excellent in-shoe climate.
Roominess: footwear designed to follow the natural shape of the foot
A roomy forefoot allows the toes to move freely. The muscles responsible for toe movement play an important role in maintaining the natural shape and arches of the foot. A straight or slightly outward-sloping inner toe line gives the big toe the space it needs to push off effectively, while a spacious, rounded outer toe area allows all the toes to extend naturally without being compressed. A soft, comfortable fit around the instep and ankles completes the conditions for a relaxed, natural stride.
Flexibility: the foot changes shape while walking
As we walk, the heel first takes the body’s weight. The load then moves in a curve towards the base of the little toe and finally towards the big toe. During push-off, as the heel lifts, the foot naturally bends at the ball of the foot. Flexible shoes allow this movement to happen naturally with every step.
A good in-shoe climate: the right balance of breathability, water resistance, and thermal insulation
A comfortable in-shoe climate begins with carefully selected, high-quality materials sourced from Slovenia and Italy and manufactured to strict European standards. Predominantly natural materials help regulate temperature, keeping feet cool in summer and comfortably warm in winter. In wet conditions, they provide sufficient water resistance while maintaining excellent breathability.
At Proalp, we do not generally recommend waterproof membranes, as they inevitably reduce breathability. Waterproof membranes are valuable in extremely wet conditions, but for everyday wear in dry weather, breathable footwear offers greater comfort.
Proalp shoes are breathable thanks to a traditional manufacturing method that is considered a luxury today. It involves a high level of skilled craftsmanship and the use of premium materials, making it unsuitable for mass production but ensuring exceptional comfort and durability.

Proalp barefoot footwear has been developed around our vision of creating flexible, roomy footwear made from premium-quality materials. Like all Proalp footwear, our barefoot models are breathable, durable, and available in a wide range of colours.
Their thin soles provide as much contact with the ground as footwear can realistically allow. You will not feel small sharp stones, but with every step your feet can naturally adapt to the terrain, creating an experience that comes remarkably close to walking barefoot.
The sole plays a key role in footwear performance
If shoes in the past were often too stiff, many modern shoes have moved towards excessively soft soles, which do not necessarily provide greater flexibility. A soft, thick sole compresses under pressure, disrupting the foot’s natural movement pattern and reducing its ability to function efficiently.
Proalp’s roomy non-barefoot footwear features soles that provide sufficient cushioning on hard surfaces while remaining firm enough to encourage the foot muscles to stay active during walking. Their flexibility is achieved through flex-stitched construction, where only a minimal amount of adhesive is used during manufacturing.

We also aim to raise awareness not only about healthy footwear, but also about fair pricing. Proalp prices do not fluctuate with the seasons or promotional campaigns because they are set without excessive retail mark-ups that require large discounts later on.
