When developing all Proalp footwear models, our primary focus is on creating a healthy in-shoe climate through the use of natural materials and construction methods that provide both breathability and thermal comfort.

In general, greater waterproofness comes at the expense of breathability. However, Contact C2 and Contact S2 barefoot ankle boots incorporate several features that help reduce the penetration of moisture while maintaining excellent comfort and ventilation.

Features that help keep feet dry

The first line of defence is the hydrophobic leather used for the uppers. To maintain its water-resistant properties, regular care with a suitable waterproofing treatment is recommended.

In wet conditions, the vulcanised rubber sole also helps prevent moisture from entering the shoe. The sole features a protective rubber rand that extends approximately 2 cm above ground level around the foot, providing additional protection from water, mud and wet vegetation.

A different approach from waterproof membrane footwear

Footwear built in this way offers a very different experience from shoes made with synthetic materials and waterproof membranes.

At Proalp, we do not use waterproof membranes in our barefoot shoes. Instead, we prioritise breathability, moisture management and thermal comfort. Our natural materials allow moisture and warm air to escape from the shoe while helping to maintain a comfortable temperature around the foot.

The choice of socks also plays an important role. High-quality natural fibres, particularly wool, complement these properties exceptionally well by improving moisture management and insulation.

Are Contact S2 barefoot hiking ankle boots suitable for snow?

Many customers use Contact S2 barefoot hiking boots for winter hiking and report excellent performance in snowy conditions, including a good degree of water resistance. In practice, they perform very well in moderate snow and typical winter conditions.

However, we do not provide a formal waterproof guarantee, as the shoes are not systematically tested for waterproof certification.

As a company located at the foot of the mountains, with generations of experience living and hiking in alpine environments, we would also point out that for steep, snow-covered winter terrain, footwear with a more torsionally rigid sole is generally more suitable than highly flexible barefoot shoes.

What Contact S2 was designed for

As the designers and manufacturers of Contact S2, our goal was not to create a boot intended primarily for use in deep snow.

Instead, we designed a versatile barefoot hiking boot that can be used comfortably throughout the year.

The Contact S2 was developed to provide:

  • excellent grip on demanding dry and mixed terrain,
  • natural barefoot movement with reliable traction,
  • a secure fit on uneven ground,
  • effective temperature regulation in all seasons,
  • outstanding breathability and moisture management.

Particular attention has been given to the shape of the last and the upper. One of the key features of the Contact S2 is the optional Velcro ankle strap, which helps to stabilise the foot inside the boot on uneven terrain, especially during descents.

The natural materials and breathable construction create a comfortable microclimate inside the shoe. They help release excess heat and moisture while keeping feet warm in winter and comfortable in warmer conditions.

Contact C2: Leather barefoot boots for everyday winter wear

The Contact C2 model was created primarily for urban use during winter and the transitional seasons.

It is available with two lining options:

  • a fully lined warm wool interior for maximum winter comfort,
  • a standard lining supplied with removable insoles made from natural sheep’s wool and jute.

Like all Proalp barefoot footwear, Contact C2 combines natural foot movement, foot-shaped comfort and breathable natural materials, making it an excellent choice for everyday wear in cooler weather.
